Buffalo Emmett was Buffalo-ooed  in Custer State Park - South Dakota!

"Buffalo Are Dangerous Do Not Approach"

THAT's what the sign says at Custer Park!  This photo and song is based on a true story.

On June 20, 1999, Buffalo Emmett and his two companions visited Custer State Park while on vacation in the Black Hills.

Their experience is present in song on this CD (lyrics follow) as a warning to all visitors.

Emmett's personal experience shows that modern man has lost respect for the buffalo and any understanding of the natural world. Though armed with an automatic self-focusing camera - a two-legged, "technically advanced" modern man is STILL NO MATCH FOR A CHARGING BUFFALO!
Emmett requested Black Hills local singer-songwriter Bunny Sings Wolf to write a song about his life-changing event. The song tells his story.

Following are the words to this song:

He looks cautiously out the window to a well-lit city street, from a plush chair behind his desk
Emmett thinks about the week.
When he took a small vacation - out West to get some air -
And nearly lost his life because he missed a signpost there.
He hadn't seen the sign that said - Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach

With a camera in his hand, A photo with which to take,
Emmett strolled across the prairie grass - his souvenir to make
But he failed to see the sign, posted there by the road,
Didn't know he was about - to get himself "Buffaloed"
He didn't see the sign that said - Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach
It looked innocent enough, as the beast faced toward the sun -
'Til the buffalo turned and charged, then Emmett began to run
The animal loomed large with his nose on Emmett's neck
Emmett scrambled for the car, where his two friends held their breath.
Yes, it happened in a flash - Emmett made it to the door
His brother turned the wheel and pushed the peddle to the floor
The bounding Buffalo charged up closely toward the side
Barely missing the group in the car who would never forget that ride!
The day they missed the sign that said -Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach
Now, the story of Emmett's brush with this life-changing Buffalo charge
Can be read on Emmett's web site in a message clear and large
There in golden letters on your computer right in your home-
You can read the sign he missed when Emmett went where Buffalo roam
The sign, he never saw that read - Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach
Yes, there's a moral to this story - a reason for this rhyme,
For dear friends, more needs be said than JUST STOP AND READ THE SIGN
For in this technical century our educated minds should know
A tourist on foot with camera in hand is NO MATCH -
FOR A CHARGING BUFFALO!
So I ask - Do we REALLY NEED a sign that says - Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach?
Common Sense should tell us, Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach?
It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Buffalo are dangerous - do not approach!
Yeah, he was a REALLY NICE BUFFALO
But when he runs over you - it's going to HURT!

3. Questions Are For (3:28)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

I'll ask you a question, for I'd like to know, who made all the stars, who made the wind blow?
Who built the rainbow, and mapped out a seed?
Who furnished this planet with all that we need with all that we need
I'll ask you a question, for I'd like to see, with eyes that understand - who caused this to be?
Who put in the wolf the cry of the night or the eye of the eagle his far-away sight his far-away sight
The courage to question it's learning to see
And finding the answers to life is the key
I'll ask you this question please don't look away
Who gave us this gift of nighttime and day
Of knowing, of memory embraces and cheer
Who gave us these questions Who put these things here?
And if you dare answer, what your really know, will you allow true answers in your heart to grow?
And ask yet more questions to fill all your need, so empty inside and let this truth lead and let this truth lead?
Where once there was longing, where once there was pain
Will you let the true answers your daily life reign?
And when answers bring yet more questions I'll ask you yet one more
Is it not for more learning
That questions are for questions are for
That's what true questions are for.

5. Trail of Tears (4:15)
Words and Music by Randy Handley 1985 Tessa Publishing Company BMI

Words to this beautiful song gifted, and printed on Bunny's website on June 13, 2004 by special permission of
songwriting legend, Randy Handley. Pilamayeah!

No more beautiful moons may we spend on our land
in the North the Scarlet Council talks of war
and the Long Knives have massacred a Tribe at Burnt Corn We're not welcome in our homes anymore.

There''ll be a trail of tears, There''ll be a trail of pain  Jackson wants the Mississippi and his twenty dollar bill,
but for us the trail of tears will remain.

No more songs of the hunters on the buffalo trails
No more smoke from sacred fires through these hills
and the number of the people will grow fewer every mile
and the children will not learn Great Spirits' will

There''ll be a trail of tears, There''ll be a trail of pain  Jackson will have the Mississippi and his twenty dollar bill, but how long will the trail of tear remain.

On the streets of Rapid City, on the road to Wounded Knee
There is Whiskey for forgetting everything

But the Old Ones say there may be time
for learning from each other,
the WAY that it was once meant to be

There is still a trail of tears, There is still a trail of pain  Jackson has the Mississippi and his twenty dollar bill, but how long will the trail of tear remain?

6. Loyalty (Like A Shadow) (2:41)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

My Shadow is Loving - I believe in you, I believe in you
Follows me wherever I go - I believe in you, I believe in you,
Under the rainbow through the cloud - I believe in you, I believe in you
Even though I don't see it - I believe in you, I believe in you.
When I face light its behind me - I believe in you, I believe in you Disappears when I walk the dark - I believe in you, I believe in you,
Still it matches every step - I believe in you, I believe in you
Every step I'm taking - I believe in you, I believe in you.
Loyalty, a simple word, that holds a meaning true.
It says, I trust in who you are, support the things you do
Won't tear you down, won't criticize, will look for good and fine,
Will build you up, and cheer you on, and share your pain as mine.
My shadows there when I'm sleeping - I believe in you, I believe in you
Shows itself when I turn on the light - I believe in you, I believe in you,
Not in colors but solid shapes - I believe in you, I believe in you Dignifies my outlines - I believe in you, I believe in you.
Loyalty, a simple word, a word to see friends through
This enduring way of love says ---

7. More Than A Mountain (3:20)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

It started with thunder and lightening stands,
Continued with prayer, then hammers and hands
The conclusion that's coming is thundering here.
The process is working that's bringing it near.
For it's more than a mountain, more than a sky, more than an eagle flying by
And a rock turned to dust clouds is more than it seems -
It's a rock that is speaking
About true dreams, about true dreams
The people wondered at such a thing, while the trees and hills made the song ring,
That the elders had visioned so long ago, and the wind responded and made it so
MORE than a mountain, more than a sky, more than an eagle flying by
And a rock turned to dust clouds is more than it seems -
It's a rock that is speaking
About true dreams, about true dreams
And Crazy Horse lived it with Buffalo pride, as have so many others who honorably died,
With the dream on the lips and a hope simple, sweet, they knew that God's gift was right under their feet
For the land IS the people, made of the dust, who will long outlive, machines turned to rust
The earth is alive and will ever be, Mankind's home for eternity, eternity
For it's more than a mountain, more than a sky, more than an eagle flying by
And a rock turned to dust clouds is more than it seems -
It's a rock that is speaking
About true dreams, about true dreams

8. Dance, Buffalo Dance! (2:50)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

This song was inspired by Bunny's visit with Rainbow Spirit and Miracle Moon, two 7th generation white buffalo who were living not too far from Bunny's house when the song came in a dream. Later, upon learning there were two buffalo (and WHITE at that!) by the very names in this song, Bunny became a frequent visitor of these buffalo friends for as long as they lived in the Black Hills.

Dance Buffalo Dance! And show me the way that I should walk
Dance Buffalo Dance! Rejoice in the life we all have got
Dance Buffalo Dance! And tell me the words of the song to talk
About  Rainbow Spirit  to guide us to the end!
Sing Buffalo Sing! And fill the earth with a happy tune!
Sing Buffalo Sing! About our Mother Earth under Miracle Moon!
Sing Buffalo Sing! Of the flowering tree that's coming soon
It's about the Rainbow Spirit to guide us to the end!
Shake off the spirit of the old world, where greed is the color blue,
Put on the smile of the sunshine in a world that's fresh and new
Leave behind all old reasonings - let peace and  harmony to grow
And look to a future where all life walks, together on a good Red Road.
Jump Buffalo Jump! Jump and play and enjoy the ride!
Leap Buffalo Leap! Abundance is with your furry white hide!
Dance Buffalo Dance! Cross over the cloud to other side and
Dance in the Rainbow Spirit to guide us to the end!

 9. Two Worlds Clash  (4:28)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

STORY BEHIND THE SONG: 1-5-2005 - it is now time to share publicly what I had written in 2000 - how this song came to me. Saw this in vision while swimming laps in an indoor pool in 2000, it showed me many lives lost, earth cleansing dream - horrific! Many, many dead bodies! But I was also shown my lifes' "work" ahead of me that would mean tremendous changes in my "religion", knowledge of how things work, and a commitment to follow through with the things shown me I must do for harmony, healing and the blossoming to follow, a sacred hoop mending for all my relations. It was to "begin" with a vision quest - (see song 11. which described this for me) - I must go on - 4 days on Harney Peak (Thunder Being Mountain!) and at the time of this swim, I did not even know what a "vision quest" was, nor did I know how high or how significant that mountain is in the center of the sacred Black Hills. It was several weeks later when I came across the book "Black Elk Speaks" to educate me about some of the significance of this vision and the strange and wonderful work I was to "do."
Confirmation came with a petrified rock found at the end of my last lap that I swam at the conclusion of seeing this vision. There, at the bottom of the pool (now what was THAT doing in an indoor swimming pool???) was this rock with many pictures upon it that showed the things of the vision! Just after I dove down and I found this rock and recognized the pictures were what I had just been "shown," a young girl burst into the pool area and said "oh, you found MY rock. I have hundreds of those all around my house!" And she took it from me as I stood in the shallow end of the pool, dumbfounded. I fumbled around wondering how I might get that rock back so that I would always have this confirmation/reminder of my dream. But I felt a little silly too! So MUCH had been shown me about so MANY changes I would have to make, someone I was again be-coming - and my brain wondered if I had just imagined all of this!? But - no, it MUST be real - there was this rock to "prove" it! I went into the locker room and dug out my "Sacred Ground" CD out of my duffle bag, and quickly got dressed. I approached the swim class that had gathered on the side of the pool and timidly asked the teacher if I could speak with the young lady in the back row. Curious, she said "OK". I marched up to the 12 year old and in front of her whole class asked "would you like to trade this CD of mine for that rock of yours?." Briefly, she looked defiant, holding the rock close to her chest. Then she looked around at her fellow classmates that seemed to be holding their breath, asking with their eyes, "what is there to figure out about that? Go for the CD!" - Reluctantly, she traded me the precious rock for the CD. Ever since then, I l have looked at that rock often whenever I doubt the wondrous ways of the universe and my small part of its outworkings at this time! As I contemplated these strange happenings, I took the rock to bed with me that night, and this song came in a dream at 3:00 a.m.

Two worlds clash and nothings heard but Thunder
Two worlds clash, then comes the cleansing rain
A new world rises to fill our hearts with wonder
When all our relations live in peace again.
Stretch out your palms and raise them up to heaven -
Cry and wail for the vision has come true
Listen to the red stone that tells of these beginings -
And pray Great Spirit leads you
In JUST what you must do
When Two worlds clash and nothings heard but Thunder
Two worlds clash, then comes the cleansing rain
A new world rises to fill our hearts with wonder
When all our relations live in peace again.
Don't stop now, walking to the horizon
Of all the dreams you thought were just too grand to know
Don't look back, but gaze towards tomorrow
For fear and past can't lead you to where we all shall grow
When Two worlds clash and nothings heard but Thunder
Two worlds clash, then comes the cleansing rain
A new world rises to fill our hearts with wonder
When all our relations live in peace again.
Great Mystery is vast, and in our sacred journey
Love surrounds our teepees - It's voice is in our breath
When two worlds clash We stand and sing, rejoicing
For we have found true life as the old system meets its death.

11. Vision Quest (3:34)
Words and Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

Heading for their consequences as fast as their feet could take them
they look to the horizon and wonder how it will shape them
they toss behind old realities drilled deeply in their heads
and search a more sacred way of life to become a slender thread
in ALL THAT IS AND ALL THAT WAS AND ALL THAT WILL EVER BE
THEY CRY OUT FOR A VISION THE PRAY THEIR HEART WILL SEE
It's high upon a mountain where the sunset breezes blow
They hear the heartbeat of the earth from a place they've never known
And though they've always lived here in the life time that they've seen
They find new joy in knowing the truth that's in their dream
Of ALL THAT IS AND ALL THAT WAS AND ALL THAT WILL EVER BE
THEY CRY OUT FOR A VISION THE PRAY THEIR HEART WILL SEE
And as they approach eternity when they live now what they've learned to trust
And always Great Spirit hears their prayer
When it is sent in humbleness
On wings sent high above in clouds
From hearts of truth and joy they send
A heartfelt prayer of thankfulness for this vision from their best friend,
From ALL THAT IS AND ALL THAT WAS AND ALL THAT WILL EVER BE
THEY CRY OUT FOR A VISION THE PRAY THEIR HEART WILL SEE

12. O Great Spirit (3:34)
Music by Bunny Sings Wolf 2001 Hillbunny Productions ASCAP

Words by unknown author, royalties for words
are donated to Lakota Lodge Learning and Training Center, Hill City, SD

O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind and whose breath gives life to all the world,

hear me!
I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes Ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise, so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every tree and rock.
I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy, myself.
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes,
So when life fades,   As the fading sunset,   My spirit may come,  To you ,  Without Shame.

    White Buffalo Calf Woman

Pte Sa We -  Buffalo Calf Woman

Why does Bunny play the "Native American" flute?

Just as a "French horn" is a particular type of musical instrument, "Native American flute" refers to a particular type/style of musical instrument.  Also the style of storytelling dubbed "Native American Storytelling" does not guarantee presentation by an enrolled member of a Federally-recognized tribal member.

A reviewer with the Rapid City Journal  dubbed Bunny's music as "Lakota-inflective Folk" which  aptly describes the type and subject matter of  the original music that has come to her in dreams which she shares often with flute music (which also came in dreams along with the lyrics and music of her songs).  Her music comes to build bridges among races of all people, Red, Yellow,  White and Black, and educate, show honor and respect for human BE-ings, Lakota and ALL other earth- nurturing, Native American and/or indigenous or other life honoring ways, perspectives and cultures.

Although Bunny has a rich mix of first nations ancestry, continues to learn from, shares with and associates with many well respected "Federally-recognized"  Native American Indian tribal elders, chiefs, and medicine people, and she has  researched the  stories and teachings that stem from cultural perspectives that she may share in workshops or performances,  please know that the music and the original songs she shares (and the stories and teachings that come with them) have come to her in dreams.

While she plays Native American flutes in music that is enjoyed and endorsed by many prominent card carrying Native Americans,  Bunny Sings Wolf's music does NOT claim to be "Native American made"  as is now specified by the U.S. Government.   IF it is your desire to listen only to music made by an enrolled member of a "federally-recognized"  "Native American" musician, you may find them through a web search.

Most asked question:    "How can I get a copy of Bunny's latest new songs that I  heard at her concerts?"

Most of Bunny's ORIGINAL SONGS (upward of 450 at last count) have "arrived" usually at 3:00 a.m., in the form of dreams  since Bunny has been living at home in the Black Hills.  Waking her from deep sleep - playing in her head - complete with words and music, she records them, to learn and share later. In honoring this unique music gift, Bunny feels a solemn responsibility to the Creator to use her voice and carry these songs to as many people as possible.  Lyrics of some of these songs, yet unreleased on CD, may be found on Unreleased Lyrics page.
